Australia Drone Mapping
In a partnership established in 2022, Australian software engineering consultancy KJR Australia has worked with Western Yalanji peoples in Far North Queensland to develop a digital platform for documenting rock art, using drones, AI and mapping technology.
This is used to search areas of land that have been previously inaccessible and discover Aboriginal rock art dating back thousands of years. Part of this partnership includes rangers obtaining drone certification and training in data collection, which will additionally aid in wildlife tracking, fire control, land management, and reconnecting the community with its culture and history.
The sites will be identified and digitally catalogued to ensure their preservation and minimise the loss of an estimated 10,000 historically significant rock art sites across Far North Queensland.
