– Water on Country

Proudly funded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Foundation (GBRMF) in 2023, this Goondoi Rangers project involves water mapping and construction of the sediment pond on the Goondoi wetlands.

Funding for this project has facilitated rangers’ water quality training including use of underwater drones, water mapping, student workshops, and community field events.

Inland waters are essential for sustaining the biodiversity of the regions where they are located, and monitoring their water quality is of utmost importance. Mangroves such as those in the Goondoi wetlands provide nursery habitats for various marine species, protecting these species and allowing their numbers to thrive. Water quality assessment allows for the monitoring of the habitats and the prediction of changes in the environment.

GBRMF has supported the Goondoi Rangers, allowing us as Traditional Custodians to continue conservation efforts of both Land and Sea Country, as well as instilling the importance of such research and efforts in our younger generations.
